What are debt securities?

Debt instruments are issued by governments, quasi-government bodies or large corporations to raise capital, which may be in the form of bonds, notes, etc
-
In general, the issuer promises to pay you interest (the coupon) on a regular basis throughout the life of the instrument and then repay you the stated principal (the face value) at its maturity (for principal-protected debt securities)
-
Some debt securities have a guarantor who guarantees the payment and delivery obligations of the issuer
How do Bonds work basically?
-
Fixed Rate Bonds – Bonds that pay a fixed amount of interest at regular intervals. These are the most common bond type in the market

Floating Rate Bonds – Bonds whose interest rate is adjusted periodically according to a pre-specified money market benchmark rate (such as LIBOR–London Interbank Offered Rate)
